Study Resources - Environmental Education

  • Caretta Research Project (Loggerhead Sea Turtle)
    • The Caretta Research Project is a hands-on research, conservation and education program that has been protecting the threatened loggerhead sea turtles that nest on Wassaw National Wildlife Refuge since 1973.  Staff and project participants patrol the 6.5-mile beach every night collecting data on nesting turtles and protecting their eggs and hatchlings from predators.  Information collected by the volunteers helps to protect the turtles and improve their chances of survival along the Southeast coastline.  Participants come out for weekly sessions throughout the summer and stay in rustic conditions (a step above camping).  Participants must be at least 15 years old and in good health, with a positive attitude and a sense of adventure.  Ages have ranged from 14-78 years old and many families have come to work for the week.  Cost is $750/person/week, which covers food, housing, and boat transportation to and from the island.
